2024 Baseball Season Preview

2024 Baseball Season Preview

The Providence Christian College baseball team enters the 2024 season, the 10th season in the program's history, adding solid depth, new leadership, and great energy for the season ahead. The team is composed of twenty-three returners, ten transfers, and nine freshmen. The addition of experience, depth, and talent should help elevate the program to new heights in 2024.

When a program experiences growth in their roster, there tends to be enthusiasm for the upcoming season, and this year we are excited for the anticipated progress. While there were a few athletes that graduated last year, the team grew in size, from additional transfers to multiple freshmen who are hungry to start their college careers. In addition, Coach Kevin Smith added a new assistant coach, Eric Fuller, to his staff. The news of Coach Fuller's hiring was warmly welcomed by the team, and his care for each player has made a positive impact on the team thus far.

With the Sea Beggars returning twenty-three players from the 2023 roster, experience and maturity spearhead the momentum as we head into the 2024 season. In the forefront of the team, there are eighteen healthy pitchers ready to take the mound, compete at the highest level, and keep the Beggs in contention. Senior Cody Leonard and Junior Kyle Fuller should continue to have a significant impact with their bats, and Elijah De Guzman and Nathan Oliveira will offer years of experience and maturity in helping lead the program in their respective roles. Kyle Melvin has proven to be a well-respected spiritual leader and has been a staple within the program for the past four years. Melvin's leadership and maturity are the glue that brings unity to the Providence baseball program.

When asked about the 2024 pitching staff, Alex Carillo commented, "I think our pitching staff has a lot of depth this year. We can compete on the mound, throw strikes, and get hitters out. I think the team is looking promising." Cody Leonard expanded on the team, saying, "We've had new additions of guys at every position that can perform at an elite level, and not to forget about their offensive power. I think we can do some serious damage this year. We have increased our competitiveness and will continue to be consistent in all of our crafts. I think fans should expect our games to be filled with high energy, passion, and intensity as we compete against each opponent on the field."

The ten transfers should create an immediate spark both offensively and defensively while helping to propel the Sea Beggars forward. Between the ten transfers and nine freshmen, the coaching staff has the depth needed to help the Sea Beggars compete day in and day out. Carillo said, "We have a group of guys that are very welcoming, and all our guys have really worked hard and want to help take this team to a conference tournament appearance!" He added, "The new group of guys are here to compete and show that they can make a difference. Chris Gonzalez will be taking on a weekend starter role, and I can't wait to watch him compete and go toe to toe with the hitters within the conference. His pitching command and velocity are unbelievable, and his work ethic is consistent. As a freshman, he might feel jittery about pitching for the first time in college, but I have confidence that he will compete and win some games." Michael Sanchez added, "We really need someone with great baseball IQ and experience, and Isaiah Ayala has shown that every time he was on the field practicing."

Leonard highlighted key teammates to keep an eye on this season, saying, "Someone to watch out for this season is Brandon McCray and Victor Vega. Both are elite middle infielders, and the guys battle at the plate. Also, Preston Wilson, Marco Bates, and Nathan Oliveira. They're both quick outfielders who make plays and are serious threats as hitters." He added, "Fans should look forward to the energy and passion that fill this program up! We've worked really hard day in and day out, and we can't wait to share these memories with the Providence community." Carillo added to the players to watch list, saying, "I think Josh Colon is a guy to watch this season. Many people might think that he is undersized, but I think he is unstoppable and will make a huge impact on the team." He added about the team, "The team is looking great, and it is a close-knit group. Throughout preseason practices, there is cohesiveness built up, and the hope is to continue to improve day by day."

De Guzman said, "Fans should expect us to come out with fire and passion. After a rough season last year, we want to show our fans that we have the ability to make it all the way to the end of this season." He added, "So far, I think that this group of guys are here to compete and want each other to do well every day. Many leaders, including myself, want to lead by example. We want to show that, with hard work and continually believing in yourself, anything is possible." When asked what the biggest difference from his last year's campaign to this year was, Michael Sanchez said, "The biggest difference for me, and I think a lot of our guys, is the change in team unity. There were many times we blamed each other for the downfalls of the team last year, but this year we want to stay as one unit and compete no matter what the end result is. As we start this season, we want to keep God at the forefront, and each game is for Him and not for us."

The coaching staff is optimistic that the talent and cohesiveness of the 2024 team should make significant strides forward, and they are preparing the team to peak at the right time. Coach Smith said, "The players have worked hard this fall and into the beginning of our season, and I hope good things happen this season." Coach Fuller added, "I love this team and the heart and passion we will play with. It's a team that will compete every single pitch for one another." The team has a collective excitement about the season ahead and an equal excitement to share the journey with the Sea Beggar family. The team opens the 2024 campaign at home against Southern California Leadership on Friday at 10 a.m at Glendale Sports Complex. Come out and cheer on your Dirt Beggs as they look to make history in the 2024 season.
